A private club inside a Gilded Age mansion is a slightly unusual thing to walk into for the first time. People arrive unsure whether they are early, whether they are dressed right, where to leave the car, and whether they are allowed to look at the rooms or only at their table.

So here is the plain version: what actually happens on a first visit to the Pillsbury Club, from the parking space to the last drink.

Before you come: you will need a reservation

The Pillsbury Club is a private, members-style club, and admission is limited to guests with a valid reservation — for a tour, a dining experience, an event, or another scheduled activity. That is deliberate: it keeps the mansion from filling up beyond what the rooms can comfortably hold. You may be asked to show proof of your reservation when you arrive.

Arrive thirty to forty-five minutes early

This is the single most useful piece of advice we can give a first-time guest, and almost nobody takes it the first time.

Arriving half an hour before your reservation gives you time to check in without rushing, walk the ground floor, and actually look at the house — the carved oak, the imported English rooms, the stone fireplaces. A great many of our guests report that their favourite part of the evening happened before the thing they booked. If you turn up four minutes before your tour, you get the tour. You do not get the mansion.

One scheduling note: if you are here on behalf of Minneapolis Trolley Tours, the Club opens one hour before your scheduled departure, so there is time built in for exactly this.

Where to park

Complimentary parking is available for Club guests. There is a designated guest lot directly across the street, and free public street parking on the surrounding neighbourhood streets where it is permitted — please read the signs, as the Club is not responsible for cars parked on public streets.

If you would rather not drive at all, rideshare drop-off and pick-up work well at the front entrance, and Metro Transit bus routes serve the surrounding Whittier neighbourhood. You are also a short walk from the Minneapolis Institute of Art, which makes an easy afternoon before an evening reservation.

What there is to do once you are inside

More than whatever you booked. The Club is a mansion, and it is arranged so that a reservation for one thing gives you access to several.

There is the speakeasy-style bar, where the seasonal cocktail list changes through the year. There is the historic dining room — a space designed for Gilded Age entertaining and still doing the job; current menus are on our dining page. There is the Pillsbury Club Market, stocked with Minnesota-made goods, artisan work, local art and the sort of gift you cannot buy at an airport. And there are the private club rooms if you are here with a group.

What to book if it is your first time

If you want the house itself, take the year-round guided mansion tour. If you want the city, the Club is the departure point for the trolley — the sightseeing tour, the Gilded Age Mansion Tour, the Candlelight Ghost Tour, the True Crime tour and the Murder Mystery all leave from the door. For most first-timers the best combination is a tour plus a table: see the mansion, then sit down in it.

The practical fine print

Photography. Casual personal photos are welcome, as long as they do not get in the way of other guests, staff, tours or dining service. Anything staged — engagement photos, portraits, brand content, professional equipment — needs a photography or filming reservation booked in advance.

Policies. Smoking and vaping are prohibited anywhere on the property, and outside food and drink are not permitted inside the Club. The full list is on our Club Policies page and is worth two minutes before you come.

Where you are standing
